Type A Jadeite Laughing Buddha Pendant, Lavender, 18K Gold

A natural Type A jadeite laughing Buddha pendant in icy-glutinous texture, an even blue-toned lavender (蓝春) throughout, set in 18K white gold. The stone measures about 18 × 24.6 × 4.8 mm.

Icy-glutinous jadeite sits between icy and glutinous: fine-grained and semi-translucent, with a soft glow. Fine and flawless-looking, the whole Buddha is one even blue-lavender from head to belly, with a soft glow like the evening sky. The face, ears and round belly are fully carved with clean lines. A Buddha that is lavender all over is uncommon; most lavender pieces show color only in a patch.

The seated Buddha is Maitreya, the smiling, big-bellied Buddha of good humor and tolerance, the most popular figure among jadeite pendants. Blue lavender (蓝春) is the cooler shade of lavender: a crisp purple in white light that warms to a hint of pink under warm light, for women who love purple but prefer it soft.

Fine stone lines and cotton are hallmarks of natural jadeite; completely clean material is very rare. The lavender of this Buddha pendant is sensitive to light: warmer light pulls it pink, daylight pulls it blue. The gold setting reflects light, so photos can look a little brighter than the piece.
