Type A Jadeite Laughing Buddha Pendant, Icy, Green Belly

A natural Type A jadeite laughing Buddha pendant in icy texture with a spot of bright green on the belly and a gold bail, about 23.3 × 25.9 × 6.4 mm.

Icy jadeite is fine-grained and highly translucent, so light passes through it with a clear, watery glow. Clean and flawless: the whole Buddha is clear and bright, and right in the middle of the round belly sits a vivid spot of bright green, like an emerald set in ice, with a soft green glow showing through the back as well. The face, robe folds and sleeves are clearly carved and smoothly polished. The gold bail at the top is ready for a chain.

When a carver places the stone's own natural color where it shows best, the trade calls it qiao se (俏色, "clever color"). Here the only spot of green sits on the belly, and since Maitreya is known above all for his big belly, the green becomes the focus of the whole piece.

Every natural jadeite has its own texture; look closely and you may find a tiny cotton spot or a stone line. Phone screens can make the green of this Buddha pendant look brighter or darker than it is; the video in natural light is the best guide. Please judge it from the photos and video of the actual piece.
