Jade Meaning and Beliefs: Elements, Birth Days and Luck

Updated

Green, white, lavender and green-and-white jadeite bangles on red silk beside a red envelope and plum blossoms, with the title Jade Meaning and Beliefs: Elements, Birth Days and Luck

In Chinese culture, jade stands for virtue, peace and protection, and a jadeite bangle is often passed down as an heirloom. Folk tradition also matches jade colors to the five elements (green to Wood, white to Metal, red to Fire, black to Water) and, in Thailand, to the color of your birth day (green for Wednesday, purple for Saturday). These are cultural beliefs. There is no scientific evidence that jade heals or brings luck, but its meaning is a fine reason to wear it.

What does jade symbolize?

Jade has been treasured in China for thousands of years. Jadeite, the jade mined in Myanmar (Burma), became popular at the Chinese court in the Qing dynasty, and it inherited the meanings that had grown up around older jade. Those meanings travelled with Chinese communities across Southeast Asia, so a jade bangle means much the same thing in Guangzhou, Ho Chi Minh City and Bangkok.

Meaning Chinese saying What it means in practice
Virtue 君子比德于玉 ("a gentleman compares his virtue to jade") Confucian texts describe jade as warm, firm and honest, like a good person
Peace and safety 平安 (ping an) The most common wish of all; the round safety buckle pendant is named after it
Protection 玉能挡灾 ("jade blocks misfortune") Jade is believed to take bad luck in place of its wearer
Long life 长寿 (chang shou) Jade is a classic birthday gift for parents and grandparents
Family heirloom 传家宝 (chuan jia bao) A bangle passes from grandmother to mother to daughter
Worth beyond money 黄金有价玉无价 ("gold has a price, jade is priceless") Jade's value is said to be personal as well as financial

In Vietnam, a vòng cẩm thạch (jadeite bangle) is a classic gift from a mother or grandmother, and many families also give one at a wedding alongside gold. Many Vietnamese buyers choose the color by their element (mệnh). In Thailand, หยกพม่า (Burmese jade) is linked to luck, wealth and protection, especially in Thai-Chinese families, and many people choose the color by the day of the week they were born.

Which jade color suits which element?

Vietnamese buyers often ask "cẩm thạch hợp mệnh nào?": which element does jade suit? The answer in folk tradition depends on the color.

The five elements (Chinese 五行, Vietnamese ngũ hành) are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each is traditionally linked to colors: Wood to green, Fire to red, pink and purple, Earth to yellow and brown, Metal to white and grey, Water to black and dark blue. The elements also form a generating cycle: Water nourishes Wood, Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth, Earth yields Metal, and Metal produces Water.

Folk advice usually says a color suits two kinds of people: those of the same element, and those whose element it generates. Green is Wood, and Wood feeds Fire, so green jadeite is commonly said to suit both Wood and Fire people. It also names one element to avoid: the one the color "overcomes" in the controlling cycle (Metal cuts Wood, Wood breaks up Earth, Earth dams Water, Water puts out Fire, Fire melts Metal).

Jadeite color Element by color Commonly said to suit Commonly said to avoid
Green, from pale to vivid Wood Wood, Fire Earth
White or colorless (icy) Metal Metal, Water Wood
Red or orange-red (翡, fei) Fire Fire, Earth Metal
Yellow or honey Earth Earth, Metal Water
Lavender Usually Fire; some sources say Water or Wood Fire, Earth (most sources) Metal (most sources)
Black (墨翠, very dark green) Water Water, Wood Fire

A few things are worth knowing before you rely on a table like this:

  • Sources disagree. Lavender is the clearest example, but advisers also differ on bluish greens and mixed colors. A bangle with green, lavender and yellow together (福禄寿, "fortune, prosperity, longevity") is often said to suit everyone.
  • Your element depends on whom you ask. In Vietnam, mệnh usually comes from the birth year. Chinese fortune tellers more often read the full birth chart (八字) and look for a "useful element" (喜用神), which can differ from the birth-year element.
  • It is tradition, not measurement. Many people follow it because it gives a gift more meaning. Others ignore it and wear the color they love. Both are fine.

Which jade color matches your Thai birth day?

In Thailand, each day of the week has its own color (สีประจำวันเกิด), linked to the planet and guardian deity of that day. Many Thai people wear their birth-day color, and the same idea is applied to jewelry.

Day you were born Day color Jadeite often matched to it
Sunday Red Red or orange-red jadeite
Monday Yellow Yellow or honey jadeite
Tuesday Pink Pinkish lavender
Wednesday (daytime) Green Green jadeite, the classic choice
Wednesday (night) Grey or black Black jadeite (墨翠) or grey
Thursday Orange Orange-red jadeite
Friday Light blue Bluish or blue-green jadeite
Saturday Purple Lavender jadeite

Because green is the most familiar jadeite color, green bangles are especially popular with Wednesday-born wearers, and lavender with Saturday-born. Thai astrologers also publish lists of lucky colors for love, money and work, and an "unlucky" color (สีกาลกิณี) for each birth day. These lists differ between astrologers and often change from year to year, so check the one you trust.

Many Thai wearers also take a new bangle or pendant to a temple and ask a monk to bless it with a blessing mark or holy water before wearing it for the first time. Others choose an auspicious day to put it on. These are personal and religious practices, and they are about what the piece means to the wearer.

What do the common sayings about jade mean?

  • "People nourish jade, and jade nourishes people" (人养玉,玉养人). The idea is that wearing jade every day brings out its beauty, and that jade in turn brings its wearer calm. In practical terms, regular wearing and gentle wiping keep the surface clean and glossy. The color and translucency of natural Type A jadeite do not change in any important way with wear.
  • "A broken bangle took the misfortune for you" (玉碎挡灾). A bangle that breaks is said to have taken bad luck in its wearer's place, so it is usually not seen as a bad omen. See what to do with a cracked or broken jade bangle.
  • "Men wear Guanyin, women wear Buddha" (男戴观音女戴佛). A well-known pendant custom, not a rule. See jadeite pendant meanings.
  • "Wear it on the left." Many people wear a bangle on the left wrist, for reasons that are partly traditional and partly practical. See which hand to wear a jade bangle on.
  • "Jade chooses its owner." People often say a piece "calls" to them. It is a gentle way of saying: buy the one you keep coming back to.

Does wearing jade have health or spiritual benefits?

There is no scientific evidence that jadeite heals illness, improves circulation, cools the body or changes your luck. You may read such claims on sales pages, but they have not been shown in any reliable study.

That does not make wearing jade pointless. People wear it because it is beautiful, because it was a gift from someone they love, and because its traditional meanings matter to them. Many say a familiar bangle feels calming to touch. That is a personal experience, and a perfectly good reason to wear one.

Some people ask whether jade can cause headaches or make them feel unwell after they start wearing it. There is no evidence that the stone itself causes this. Practical causes are more likely:

  • The bangle is too tight. A tight bangle presses on the wrist, leaves marks and can feel uncomfortable, especially in hot weather when hands swell. See how to choose a jadeite bangle size.
  • The piece is heavy. A thick bangle you are not used to can tire the wrist.
  • The metal parts irritate your skin. Some cheap chains and clasps contain nickel.

If you feel uncomfortable, take it off. If symptoms continue, see a doctor rather than blaming the jade. Some people prefer to say the piece "does not suit them" and choose another, which is a kind way to settle it.

How do I choose a jade piece for its meaning?

  1. Start with what you like. If you follow the five elements or Thai day colors, use them to narrow down the colors, then choose the piece you find most beautiful.
  2. Make sure it fits. A bangle you can wear comfortably every day carries more meaning than one that stays in a drawer.
  3. Remember that meaning does not depend on price. A pale green bangle carries the same wish for peace as a vivid one. Price depends on the quality of the jade, not on what it symbolizes.
  4. Make sure it is natural Type A jadeite. A bleached, resin-filled or dyed piece is not "real jade" in any tradition, and its color can fade or change. See how to spot treated jadeite.
  5. Ask for a certificate from a recognized gem lab, and check it. See how to verify a jadeite certificate.

On JadeiteHub, every piece is shown in real photos from the seller (some with video), every sold piece is checked against its certificate before it ships, and if it does not match the description you get a full refund.
