Jadeite Pendant Meanings: Guanyin, Buddha, Leaf & More

Updated

Illustration of five jadeite pendants hanging in a row: leaf, laughing Buddha, safety buckle, Guanyin and gourd

Most jadeite pendant designs carry a wish. Guanyin stands for protection and calm, the laughing Buddha for happiness and contentment, the round safety buckle (ping an kou) for peace and safety, the leaf for career success and the gourd for health and blessings. Many meanings come from Chinese puns: fish sounds like "surplus" and bat sounds like "good fortune". Choose a design you like, then judge the jade itself by its quality.

What do jadeite pendants mean?

In Chinese tradition, a jade pendant is rarely just an ornament. Each design carries a wish for the wearer: protection, peace, good fortune, a long life or success at work. That is why jadeite pendants are such popular gifts for births, birthdays, graduations and weddings.

The meaning comes from the design, not from the stone. A Guanyin pendant means the same thing whether it is pale or deep green; its quality and price depend on the jade itself.

Which jadeite pendants are most popular, and what do they mean?

Eight jadeite pendant designs on cords: Guanyin plaque, laughing Buddha, round safety buckle, leaf, gourd, bamboo, plain tablet and pea pod
1 Guanyin, 2 laughing Buddha, 3 safety buckle (ping an kou), 4 leaf, 5 gourd, 6 bamboo, 7 plain tablet (wu shi pai), 8 pea pod. Illustration.
Design Chinese name Meaning Often chosen for
Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion 观音 (Guanyin) Protection, calm, kindness Men, by tradition; anyone wanting protection
Laughing Buddha (Maitreya) 佛公 / 弥勒佛 (fo gong) Happiness, contentment, tolerance Women, by tradition; anyone
Safety buckle, a round disc with a hole 平安扣 (ping an kou) Peace and safety, a life that comes full circle Children, couples, travelers
Leaf 叶子 (ye zi) Career success, a good name Graduates, people starting a job or business
Gourd 葫芦 (hu lu) Health and blessings; sounds like 福禄 (fu lu, fortune and prosperity) Older relatives, new homes
Bamboo 竹节 (zhu jie) Steady progress, "rising step by step"; integrity Students, career changes
Plain tablet 无事牌 (wu shi pai) "Nothing goes wrong": a peaceful, trouble-free life Anyone; shows off clean, high-quality jade
Pea pod 福豆 / 四季豆 (fu dou) Blessings and many children; three peas wish for success in exams Weddings, new parents, students

Why do so many designs come from wordplay?

Many Chinese words share the same sound, so a picture can "spell" a wish. Carvers have used this for centuries.

Six jadeite pendant designs whose meanings come from puns and symbols: fish, bat, cicada, peach, ruyi scepter and ancient coin
1 fish, 2 bat, 3 cicada, 4 peach, 5 ruyi, 6 coin. Illustration; colors vary in real jade.
Design Chinese Why it means what it means
Fish 鱼 (yu) Sounds like 余 (yu, surplus): "may you have more than enough every year"
Bat 蝠 (fu) Sounds like 福 (fu, good fortune)
Cicada 蝉 (chan) Renewal; also 一鸣惊人, "to astonish everyone at the first cry", meaning sudden success
Peach 寿桃 (shou tao) The peach of longevity, a classic birthday wish for elders
Ruyi scepter 如意 (ru yi) Literally "as you wish"
Coin 钱 (qian) Wealth and good business

Other designs you will often see include the pixiu (貔貅), a mythical beast believed to attract and guard wealth; the dragon and phoenix for power and a happy marriage; and the twelve Chinese zodiac animals, chosen to match the wearer's birth year.

Is it true that "men wear Guanyin, women wear Buddha"?

It is a well-known saying, 男戴观音女戴佛. One common explanation is that Guanyin's calm balances a man's temper, while the Buddha's broad smile and tolerance bring a woman contentment, and 佛 (fo) also sounds a little like 福 (fu, fortune). It is a custom, not a rule. Plenty of people wear whichever design they feel drawn to, and a thoughtful gift matters more than the convention.

How do I choose a jadeite pendant?

  • Pick the meaning first, then judge the jade. Look at texture, translucency and color as you would for any jadeite. See zhong, shui and se explained.
  • Plain designs need clean material. A safety buckle or plain tablet has nowhere to hide flaws, so cracks and spots show clearly. Good ones cost more for that reason.
  • Look closely at carved areas. Carvers often place detailed carving where the stone has cracks or inclusions. There is an old saying, 无绺不雕: "no flaw, no carving". Carving is not a bad sign, but check carved areas under good light.
  • Check the craftsmanship. Faces on Guanyin and Buddha pendants should be calm and well proportioned, with smooth polishing and no rough tool marks.
  • Ask for a certificate. Make sure the pendant is natural Type A jadeite and that the certificate matches the piece. See Type A vs Type B vs Type C jadeite and how to verify a jadeite certificate.

Size, thickness, color and carving all affect price. See what determines jadeite price.

How should I wear and care for a pendant?

Check the cord and the bail regularly, since cords stretch and fray over time. Take the pendant off for sport and heavy housework, and store it in its own soft pouch. See how to care for jadeite jewelry.

On JadeiteHub, listings use the seller's own photos, and some include video. Every sold piece is checked against its certificate before it ships, with insured shipping, and if it does not match the description you get a full refund.
