How to Care for Jadeite Jewelry: Cleaning and Storage

Illustration of four steps to clean jadeite: soak, brush, rinse and dry with a soft cloth

Clean natural jadeite with lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush or cloth, then rinse and dry it. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners, household chemicals, sudden heat and hard knocks, which are the most common cause of damage. Store each piece separately in a soft pouch. Jadeite does not need oiling, soaking or special treatments, and wearing it does not change its natural color.

Does jadeite need special care?

Not much. Natural Type A jadeite is a tough, stable stone. Its color does not fade, it does not need to be kept wet or oiled, and everyday wear does it no harm. The real risks are simple:

  • Knocks and drops, which can chip or crack a piece, especially a bangle.
  • Scratches, from harder stones or from dust rubbed across the surface.
  • Harsh cleaning, such as chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners, which can damage cracks, settings and treated stones.

How do I clean jadeite at home?

  1. Soak briefly in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap or dish liquid.
  2. Brush gently with a soft toothbrush, paying attention to carved areas and the bail or setting, where dirt collects.
  3. Rinse in clean lukewarm water. Close the sink drain first.
  4. Dry with a soft, lint-free cloth, then let carved areas air-dry.

For daily wear, wiping the piece with a soft cloth is usually enough. Once every few weeks, or whenever it looks dull, give it a full wash.

What should I avoid when cleaning jadeite?

Avoid Why
Ultrasonic and steam cleaners Vibration and heat can widen existing cracks and loosen settings; they can also damage the polymer in treated jadeite
Bleach, acids, ammonia and household cleaners Can etch the polish, damage metal settings and harm treated stones
Very hot water or sudden temperature changes Rapid heating or cooling stresses the stone, especially along existing cracks
Abrasive pads, toothpaste and polishing powders Can dull the polished surface
Oils and waxes applied at home Not needed; they attract dust and can hide cracks rather than protect against them

If you are not sure whether a piece is natural, treat it as fragile. Treated (Type B) jadeite is weaker and more sensitive to heat and chemicals. See Type A vs Type B vs Type C jadeite.

How should I store jadeite?

  • Separately. Keep each piece in its own soft pouch or a lined compartment. Diamonds, sapphires and other harder stones can scratch jadeite, and jadeite can scratch softer gems and metals.
  • Flat and secure. Lay bangles flat, where they cannot roll off a shelf.
  • Away from dust. Household dust contains quartz, which is about as hard as jadeite. Wipe with a cloth rather than rubbing a dusty surface dry.
  • No water needed. There is no need to keep jadeite in water or a damp place.

When should I take my jadeite off?

Take it off for anything that risks a hard knock or contact with chemicals:

  • Sports, gym workouts and heavy lifting.
  • Housework, gardening and washing dishes with cleaning products.
  • Swimming in chlorinated pools and hot springs.
  • Cooking over a stove or using an oven.

Put jewelry on after perfume, hairspray and lotion, not before. For bangles, put them on and take them off over a bed or a soft towel. See how to choose a jadeite bangle size for tips on putting a bangle on.

Does wearing jadeite make it better?

There is a popular saying in Chinese, 人养玉,玉养人: "people nourish jade, and jade nourishes people." Regular wear and gentle wiping do keep the surface clean and bright, and skin oils can give a soft sheen. But wearing does not change the texture, translucency or natural color of jadeite. A piece that is coarse or pale will not become finer or greener over time. If a seller says otherwise, judge the stone as it is today.

What if my jadeite gets chipped or cracked?

Stop wearing it and look at it under good light. Small surface chips on a pendant can often be re-polished by a jeweler. A crack through a bangle cannot be invisibly repaired; some owners have a cracked bangle reinforced with a gold or silver band. Keep the certificate with the piece, and have a professional look at it before deciding.

Cracks also affect value. See what determines jadeite price.

How should I care for a jadeite pendant or bead necklace?

  • Check the cord or chain and the bail regularly. Cords stretch and fray over time.
  • Have bead necklaces restrung when the thread looks worn, usually with a knot between beads so that a break does not scatter them.
  • Keep cords dry where you can; wet silk cord weakens faster.

FAQ

Can I wear jadeite in the shower?

Occasional contact with water does not harm natural jadeite. Soap and shampoo can leave a film, and wet floors raise the risk of knocks, so many owners take bangles off for the shower.

Can I use an ultrasonic cleaner on jadeite?

It is best not to. Vibration and heat can widen existing cracks and loosen settings, and they can damage treated jadeite. Lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft brush are enough.

Does jadeite need to be oiled or soaked in water?

No. Natural jadeite is stable and needs neither. Oils and waxes applied at home attract dust and can hide cracks.

Will my jadeite get greener if I wear it?

No. Wearing it keeps the surface clean and bright, but it does not change the natural color, texture or translucency of the stone.

How often should I clean jadeite?

Wipe it with a soft cloth after wearing, and wash it in lukewarm soapy water every few weeks or whenever it looks dull.

Can I wear a jade bangle together with gold?

Yes. Jade and gold are a classic pairing, and gold-set jadeite is common. Wearing a jade bangle and a gold bangle on the same wrist is the risky part: they knock together, the harder jadeite scratches the gold, and a hard knock can chip or crack the jade. Wear them on different wrists or with space between, and store them separately.

Can I sleep with my jade bangle on?

Many people do, and jadeite itself is not harmed by being worn at night. The risk is knocks: in sleep your wrist hits the headboard, the bed frame or the wall without you noticing, and that is how many bangles chip or crack. A bangle that fits loosely also turns and catches more. If your bangle is valuable, or you sleep restlessly, take it off at night and keep it in a soft pouch. Pendants on a strong cord are less at risk, but a thin chain can tangle or break.
