Jade Leaf Pendant Meaning: Styles, Choosing and Price

Updated

A green jadeite leaf pendant set in white gold on a fine white gold chain, lying on ivory linen beside a smaller plain jade leaf on a dark braided cord, in soft daylight

A jade leaf pendant traditionally stands for career success, because leaf (叶, ye) sounds like career (业, ye) in Chinese. Related sayings include 金枝玉叶 (precious and cherished), 一叶成名 (making your name) and 开枝散叶 (a growing family); these are traditional wishes, not promises. Dealers cut leaves from good material because a thin, simple shape shows color and translucency with little waste, and often set them in 18K gold, sometimes with small diamonds or rhinestones, to protect the tip and edges. Choose by color, translucency, cracks, carving of the veins and setting work. Color usually outweighs size: on JadeiteHub a 29 mm full-green leaf costs more than a 37 mm floating-green one.

What does a jade leaf pendant mean?

A jade leaf pendant traditionally stands for career success. In Chinese, leaf is 叶 (ye) and career or business is 业 (ye): the two words sound the same, so a leaf on the chest is read as a wish for 事业有成, "success in your work". That is why the leaf is the pendant Chinese families most often give to graduates, to someone starting a new job and to friends opening a business.

Around that pun the leaf has gathered a few more readings, all of them traditional sayings rather than promises. Sellers in Guangdong and in Chinese-speaking shops across Southeast Asia use them every day, and knowing them helps you understand what you are being told at the counter. For an overview of every common motif side by side, see jadeite pendant meanings. This guide covers the leaf alone: what it means, why dealers cut it from good material, the main styles, how to check one, and what the two leaf pendants on JadeiteHub cost.

What sayings go with a jade leaf?

Five sayings come up again and again when a leaf pendant is sold or given. Some are old idioms; others are auspicious wordplay used by jewelers and sellers, and families tell them in different ways.

Saying Literal sense How it is used for a leaf pendant
事业有成 (shi ye you cheng) "Success in your career" Leaf (叶) sounds like career (业); the main meaning
金枝玉叶 (jin zhi yu ye) "Golden branches, jade leaves" An old idiom for someone precious and cherished; a jade leaf set in gold is said to fit it literally
一叶成名 (yi ye cheng ming) "One leaf, and you make your name" An auspicious borrowed meaning used in jewelry motifs: leaf (叶) sounds like night (夜), so the leaf borrows 一夜成名, "famous overnight"; given to students and people chasing a goal
叶叶平安 (ye ye ping an) "Peace leaf after leaf" A blessing phrase sellers use, borrowing the sound of 夜夜平安, "peace every night"; often said of double-leaf pendants
开枝散叶 (kai zhi san ye) "Branches spread, leaves scatter" An idiom for a family growing; a common gift line for newlyweds

When a leaf is carved with something else, the meanings add up:

  • Leaf with a cicada (金蝉). The cicada is traditionally linked with 一鸣惊人, "one cry that astonishes everyone", a sudden breakthrough after a long wait underground. With a leaf it reads as "a breakthrough in your career". The pairing also plays on sound: leaf (叶, ye) sounds like night (夜, ye) and the cicada's cry (鸣, ming) like name (名, ming), so a singing cicada on a leaf is read as 一夜成名, "making your name overnight". The motif is old: the Nanjing Museum holds a 金蝉玉叶 ornament, a gold cicada resting on a jade leaf. The meanings above are how the motif is read today, not a description given with that object.
  • Leaf with a bean pod (福豆). The bean pod is called the "fortune bean" and is read as a wish for fortune; the seeds lined up inside also stand for many children. Together: career plus fortune.
  • Leaf with a small insect, ladybird or bee. Mostly decoration, though sellers will find a pun for most insects. The bee (蜂, feng) is read as 封 (feng), "to be granted a title"; paired with a monkey (猴, hou, read as 侯, a noble rank) it becomes 封侯, a traditional wish for promotion seen in old paintings of a bee and a monkey.

None of these sayings is a rule, and a leaf will not get anyone a job. For how beliefs about jade work in general, see the overview linked above.

Who wears a jade leaf, and is it a good gift?

Anyone can wear a jade leaf; there is no rule for men or women, age, zodiac sign or birth year. In practice the leaf is one of the most "neutral" motifs in the trade, which is why it sells so steadily.

  • Graduates and students before exams: 一叶成名 and 事业有成.
  • A new job or a promotion: the plain career wish.
  • Friends opening a shop or a company: often a leaf with a bean pod, career plus fortune.
  • Newlyweds and new parents: 开枝散叶, a growing family.
  • Men usually choose a broader, plainer leaf on a dark cord or a sturdy chain; women often choose a slimmer leaf set in white gold. These are habits, not rules.

Why do dealers carve good jadeite into leaves?

Because a leaf shows off the material and wastes very little of it. Dealers say a carving "follows the material" (因材施艺), and good material is usually given a simple shape so nothing distracts from it.

  1. A thin, simple shape shows color and translucency. Light passes easily through a leaf a few millimetres thick, so an icy base glows and green looks brighter than it would in a thick piece.
  2. Little material is lost. A leaf is roughly the outline of a slice or a cabochon offcut. The cutter can follow a band of green, or a cluster of floating green flowers (飘花), and keep almost all of it.
  3. It keeps the weight off. A leaf of 30–40 mm is light enough for a fine chain and daily wear.
  4. Veins can tidy a surface. The central vein and side veins are carved where they help the look, and sometimes where they hide a small stone line. That is acceptable, but it means carved veins deserve a close look (see the checklist below).

That is why leaves are so often cut from icy pieces with floating green, or from small pieces of strong green left over after bangles and cabochons are cut. In the Guangdong workshops, Jieyang is known for high-end small pendants such as these, and Sihui for mid- and low-grade carvings.

Low- and mid-grade leaves are commonly cut on CNC carving machines and then finished by hand: the machine cuts the outline and veins, and a carver cleans up the lines and polishes. That is normal practice, not a defect. Machine-cut leaves tend to look identical from piece to piece, with flat, even veins; a hand-carved leaf usually has softer, more varied veins that taper naturally. For more on judging carving, see jadeite carving craftsmanship.

Why are so many jade leaves set in 18K gold?

Because the setting protects the thin parts and adds sparkle. A leaf's tip and edges are its weakest points; a gold rim or cap over the stem takes the knocks instead of the jade. Small diamonds or rhinestones along the stem or the vein add light around the green and make the piece look finished as jewelry rather than as a carving on a cord.

Gold-set jadeite is mostly made in China in 18K (75%) gold, and white gold is the usual choice for leaves because it makes green look cleaner. The setting styles you will meet:

Setting What it covers Good for
Bail only (扣头) A gold cap or loop over the stem Showing the whole leaf; lightest look
Stem and vein in gold Gold stem, sometimes a gold central vein, with small diamonds or rhinestones Protecting the stem; more sparkle
Full rim (包边) A thin gold frame around the edge The strongest protection for very thin leaves

Every setting covers some jade, and a setting can hide a crack or a thin spot. Ask for photos of the stone before setting, or check the lab certificate photo. For what a setting adds and costs, see gold-set jadeite.

What styles of jade leaf are there?

Four styles make up most of what you will see in shops and livestreams.

Four green jadeite leaf pendants in a row on ivory linen, left to right: a single plain leaf with a carved central vein, two leaves carved together as one pendant, a leaf with a small cicada resting on it, and a leaf with a bean pod carved along one side
From left: 1 single leaf, 2 double leaf, 3 leaf with cicada, 4 leaf with bean pod. Illustration.
Style Chinese name Look Meaning
Single leaf 叶子, 玉叶 One leaf, plain or with veins 事业有成
Double leaf 双叶 Two leaves joined at the stem 叶叶平安; a pair, so also given to couples
Leaf with cicada or insect 金蝉玉叶 A small cicada, ladybird or bee on the leaf 一鸣惊人, a breakthrough
Leaf with bean pod 叶子福豆 A pod carved along or beside the leaf Career plus fortune

You will also see ginkgo leaves (银杏叶), fan-shaped and popular in white-gold settings; long, narrow willow-leaf shapes; and occasionally maple leaves, which are more Western in taste. Surfaces are either plain (光面, almost no veins, used for the best color) or veined (a carved central vein and side veins). A plain leaf hides nothing, so it is priced almost entirely on material.

How do you choose a good jade leaf pendant?

Check the material first, then the carving, then the setting.

  1. Look at the veins. Good veins are smooth, continuous and natural: the central vein runs straight down the middle and the side veins taper and curve evenly on both sides. Jagged lines, veins of the same depth from end to end, and rough grooves are signs of hurried work.
  2. Check the thickness, especially at the tip. A very thin tip glows beautifully but chips easily. Look at the leaf from the side: a gentle curve with some body is stronger than a flat, knife-thin blade.
  3. Check color and base. Is the green even, or a patch with a grey base? Is the base clear and icy, or cloudy with cotton? Photos under warm light flatter green, so look in daylight too.
  4. Tell cracks from stone lines. Shine a small flashlight through the leaf. A stone line (石纹) is a healed line inside the stone that does not catch a fingernail; a crack (裂) breaks the light sharply and may reach the surface. Pay attention to lines running along a vein. See cotton and cracks in jadeite.
  5. Check the setting work. Prongs should hold the leaf firmly without lifting, the back should be smooth so it does not catch on clothes, the small diamonds or rhinestones should be set evenly, and the bail should be closed and wide enough for your chain.
  6. Ask for the certificate. Leaves are a common shape for bleached and resin-filled (Type B) and dyed (Type C) jadeite. Buy natural Type A with a lab certificate.

For cords, knots and chain lengths, see how to hang a jade pendant on a cord or chain.

How much does a jade leaf pendant cost?

Price depends on color, translucency, texture and size, in roughly that order, and on the gold and setting. The two leaf pendants listed on JadeiteHub show the rule well. Both are certified natural Type A jadeite; prices are as of 21 October 2026 and may change.

Two jadeite leaf pendants side by side on ivory linen, left to right: a larger leaf with green floating flowers on a clear icy base, and a smaller leaf in solid vivid green, the left hanging from a plain white gold bail, the right set in white gold
From left: 1 a larger leaf with floating green on an icy base, 2 a smaller leaf in full vivid green. Illustration.
Listing Material Gold Size Price
JH-000003 Icy base with floating green 18K white gold bail 37 mm US$1,629
JH-000015 Full yang green (满绿, vivid, even green) 18K white gold setting 29 mm US$7,289

The smaller leaf costs about four and a half times more. That is the general rule in jadeite: color usually outweighs size. A clear icy base with floating green flowers is attractive and light, but the green is scattered and the base is mostly colorless. A leaf that is green from edge to edge, bright and even, needs much rarer rough, and the price follows. For the full list of what moves a price, see what determines jadeite price.

How do you care for a jade leaf pendant?

Treat the thin parts gently.

  • Take it off for sport, the gym, heavy work and sleep. The tip and edges are where a leaf chips if it hits something hard.
  • Wash it in lukewarm water with mild soap and dry it; a soft toothbrush cleans dirt from the veins and around the prongs.
  • Store it on its own, away from harder stones and other jewelry.
  • Check the prongs and bail now and then; a loose prong is easy to fix before the leaf falls out.

For general care, see how to care for jadeite.

On JadeiteHub we list only jadeite with a lab certificate. Every sold piece is checked against its certificate at our inspection center before it ships, and if it does not match its description you get a full refund.

FAQ

What does a jade leaf pendant mean?

Traditionally it means career success, because leaf (叶, ye) sounds like career (业, ye) in Chinese. Related sayings are 金枝玉叶 (precious and cherished), 一叶成名 (making your name) and 开枝散叶 (a growing family). They are traditional wishes, not promises.

Can men wear a jade leaf pendant?

Yes. The leaf has no gender rule. Men often choose a broader, plainer leaf on a dark cord or sturdy chain; women often choose a slimmer leaf set in white gold.

What does a leaf with a cicada mean?

The cicada is traditionally linked with 一鸣惊人, a sudden breakthrough after a long wait. Carved on a leaf, it is read as a breakthrough in your career.

Why are jade leaves often set in gold?

The tip and edges of a leaf are thin and chip easily. An 18K gold bail, stem or rim takes the knocks, and small diamonds or rhinestones add sparkle. Ask to see the stone before setting, since metal can cover flaws.

Is a CNC-carved jade leaf bad?

No. Low- and mid-grade leaves are commonly cut on CNC machines and then finished by hand; it is normal practice. Hand-carved leaves usually have softer, more varied veins, and the material still decides most of the price.

Why does a smaller jade leaf sometimes cost more than a bigger one?

Because color usually outweighs size. A small leaf in full, vivid, even green needs much rarer rough than a larger leaf with scattered floating green on a clear base.
