Jade Saddle Ring: Meaning, Fit and How to Choose One

A jade saddle ring (马鞍戒) has a raised, saddle-shaped top over a plain band. The classic version is carved from one piece of jadeite; others are gold or silver saddle mounts with a jadeite cabochon. Men and women both wear them. Traditionally the saddle is linked to peace (鞍 sounds like 安) and "right away" wordplay, as sayings, not promises. An all-jade saddle ring cannot be resized, so measure in millimeters, check the knuckle and size up for the wide band. Check for cracks where the saddle meets the band, and buy Type A with a certificate.

What is a jade saddle ring?

A jade saddle ring (马鞍戒, má ān jiè) is a ring with a raised top that curves across the finger like a horse saddle, then slopes down on both sides into a plain band. The classic version is carved from one piece of jadeite: band, shoulders and saddle are all the same stone, with no metal at all. It is one of the most recognizable jadeite ring shapes.

From the side, the saddle is the highest and thickest part of the ring; from above, it is a long, gently domed panel that sits on the back of the finger and shows off the color. The band underneath is thinner.

The name is also used for rings where the saddle is made of metal: a gold or silver mount shaped like a saddle with a jadeite cabochon set into it. These look similar from a distance but are a different product, with different strengths, risks and prices. For the full range of ring styles, see our jadeite ring guide; this article goes deeper into the saddle ring alone.

All-jade or metal saddle: what is the difference?

The difference is where the jadeite is. In an all-jade saddle ring, every part is jadeite. In a metal saddle ring, only the top stone is jadeite and the band and saddle are gold or silver.

All-jadeite saddle ring Metal saddle with a jadeite cabochon
What is jadeite The whole ring Only the cabochon on top
Material needed A thick, crack-free block A small cabochon
Can it be resized? No Usually, by a jeweler
If knocked The band or saddle can crack or break The metal takes most knocks; the stone can still chip
What can hide problems Little; you can see through the whole ring The mount can hide cracks or thin edges of the stone; a closed back hides the underside
What you are paying for The jadeite, and how much of it was used The cabochon plus the metal and workmanship

Fine jewelry adds a third type: a saddle-shaped jadeite top, a long curved piece rather than a round cabochon, set in 18K gold, often with small diamonds around it. When a listing says "jade saddle ring", ask which of these it is. A photo from the side and one of the inside of the band settle it in seconds.

What does a jade saddle ring mean?

There is no fixed meaning, but a few associations are traditionally said in Chinese-speaking markets. Take them as sayings and gift wording, not promises.

  • Peace and stability. The character for saddle, 鞍 (ān), sounds like 安 (ān), "peace" or "safety", the same word as in 平安 (píng'ān). A saddle is also what keeps a rider steady, so the ring is often described as a wish for a settled, secure life.
  • "Right away." A saddle sits on a horse, and "on the horse" in Chinese, 马上 (mǎshàng), also means "immediately". Sellers like phrases such as 马上发财 ("wealth right away") or 马上平安 ("peace right away"). It is wordplay, the kind used on greeting cards.
  • Success. The horse appears in the idiom 马到成功 ("success as soon as the horse arrives"), which Vietnamese also uses as "mã đáo thành công". Saddle rings are sometimes given for a new job, a new business or a graduation for this reason.
  • Status. A good saddle ring needs a thick piece of fine material, so a large green one is often associated with established businessmen.

None of this depends on the ring's quality, and no ring can bring luck or money. Wear it because you like it; the sayings are a bonus.

Who wears a saddle ring, men or women?

Both. The saddle ring is often called a men's ring because large, heavy saddle rings suit bigger hands, but women wear them too, usually in a narrower, lower and more delicate cut.

Men's saddle ring (typical) Women's saddle ring (typical)
Saddle Wide and high, a strong presence Narrower and lower, sits closer to the finger
Band Thicker, often wider Thinner and slimmer
Common fingers Index, middle or ring finger Ring finger, middle finger, sometimes index
Popular colors Green, dark green, icy with green Lavender, icy, light green, green

These are tendencies, not rules. A small saddle ring in icy jadeite is a common choice for women who want something more substantial than a thin band.

How do I find the right size for a saddle ring?

Measure your finger in millimeters, check the knuckle, and size up slightly, because an all-jade saddle ring can never be resized. Jadeite cannot be stretched or cut and rejoined like metal. The size you buy is the size you keep.

  1. Measure the circumference at the base of the finger with a thin paper strip, or better, with a jeweler's ring sizer. Measure twice, in the afternoon or evening, when fingers are slightly larger.
  2. Check the knuckle. A solid ring has to pass over the knuckle, and many people's knuckles are larger than the base of the finger. If yours is, size to the knuckle, not the base.
  3. Allow for the saddle. The band under a saddle is wider from front to back than a thin band, and a wide band feels tighter. Our ring guide suggests half a size larger for wide bands, and that applies to most saddle rings.
  4. Ask for the inside diameter in millimeters, not only a size number. Chinese sellers often quote Hong Kong sizes, Thai and Vietnamese shops use their own numbers. Millimeters are the same everywhere.
  5. Ask how the inside is shaped. Some saddle rings have a slightly curved, comfort-fit inside; others are flat. A comfort-fit ring slides over the knuckle more easily at the same size.

If you are between sizes, choose the larger one. A slightly loose saddle ring may turn on the finger, which is harmless; a tight one cannot be fixed, and forcing it over a knuckle risks both finger and ring.

What should I check before buying a jade saddle ring?

Check for cracks first, then shape and finish, then color and texture, and finally the certificate. Cracks matter most because a crack in a ring this shape is where it will break.

1. Cracks where the saddle meets the band. The shoulders, where the thick saddle slopes into the thinner band, are the weak point of the ring. Stress collects there when the ring is knocked, and that is where cracks most often start. Also look at the back of the band, the thinnest part. Hold a small white flashlight against the inside of the band and turn the ring slowly through a full circle. A crack shows as a sharp line that blocks or bends the light; a natural stone line (石纹) usually looks softer and does not catch a fingernail. If you are unsure, see jade crack or natural line.

A green jadeite saddle ring lit from inside the band by a small flashlight against a dark background; light shows clearly through the band and shoulders, the thicker saddle glows less, and no crack is visible
Backlit check: thin parts glow brighter and the thick saddle darker, which is normal. What you are looking for is a sharp line that cuts the light, especially at the shoulders, where the saddle meets the band, and at the thin back of the band. Illustration.

2. Symmetry. Look straight down at the ring and from the side. The saddle should sit in the center, both shoulders should slope the same way, and the band should be the same thickness all round. A lopsided saddle often means the cutter moved it to avoid a crack or a poor patch, which is worth asking about.

3. Thickness. Very thin bands and very low saddles save material but break more easily and look less substantial. A band that is noticeably thinner at one point is a weak spot.

4. Polish, including inside. Run a finger around the inside of the band. It should be smooth and polished, with softly rounded edges. A rough or matte inside is a sign of rushed work and can be uncomfortable. The saddle top should reflect a window cleanly without wavy patches.

5. Color and texture. Judge the color in daylight, not under a seller's warm spotlight. On a saddle ring, the color on the top matters most, because that is what shows when you wear it. Check whether the green continues into the band or sits only in the saddle; both are normal, but the price should reflect it. Look at texture and translucency with the flashlight: finer texture and higher translucency make the color look livelier.

6. Type A and a certificate. Plain saddle rings are easy to make in bleached and filled (Type B) or dyed (Type C) jadeite, and cheap saddle rings in very bright, even green are often treated. Ask for a lab certificate that names the stone as natural jadeite, and check that the photo, weight and measurements on it match the ring.

Why does a saddle ring use so much material?

Because the whole ring has to come out of one block thick enough for the raised saddle. The cutter starts with a piece at least as tall as the saddle and as wide as the ring, drills out the center for the finger, and grinds the outside down to the band. Most of the starting block becomes dust or offcuts.

That has three practical effects on value:

  • The block must be clean. A crack anywhere in that block ends up in the ring, so cutters need crack-free material, which is the more expensive part of any rough.
  • The color has to be in the right place. The best color should end up on the saddle. A cutter will often turn and position the ring to put the best color on top, which can mean wasting more of the block.
  • The same material could make other things. A block good enough for a fine saddle ring could also become cabochons for set rings, which use far less material per piece. That alternative is part of what sets the price of a high-quality all-jade saddle ring.

This is why an all-jade saddle ring usually costs more than a cabochon ring of similar color and quality, and why a metal saddle with a small cabochon can show the same color for less. It is also why a cheap, large, bright green all-jade saddle ring should make you more careful, not less.

Which colors are saddle rings made in?

All of them, but each color has its own points to check.

Color What to look for Common pitfall
Green Even, lively green on the saddle; how far it runs into the band Dyed green (Type C) or bleached and filled (Type B) in cheap bright rings
Lavender A clear, visible purple in daylight; finer texture Dyed purple; lavender can look paler in daylight than in shop light. See lavender jadeite
Icy or white High translucency and a clean, glassy look Cracks and stone lines show more easily in clear material. See icy jadeite
Red or yellow Warm, natural-looking color with good translucency Much red jadeite is heated to deepen the color; a certificate should say so
Dark green or black Strong color that shows green at a thin edge under a flashlight Dark material hides cracks; check with a strong light

Green remains the classic saddle ring color. Icy saddle rings, often with a little floating green, and lavender saddle rings are popular alternatives, especially for women.

Gold or silver: which saddle setting should I choose?

If you choose a metal saddle with a jadeite cabochon, 18K gold is the stronger and longer-lasting choice, and 925 sterling silver is the more affordable one. For the full comparison of hallmarks, prong wear and value, see sterling silver vs 18K gold settings.

  • 18K gold (75% gold) holds the stone more securely and does not tarnish. It suits a ring that will be worn every day. Most gold-set jadeite is made in China in 18K gold; see gold-set jadeite for how gold settings are made and what they can hide.
  • 925 sterling silver is softer and darkens over time, so prongs and bezels wear sooner on a ring. It is a sensible choice for a modest stone or a ring you wear occasionally. Every silver setting JadeiteHub sells is 925 sterling silver.

Whichever metal you choose, ask for photos of the cabochon from the side and from the back. A metal saddle can wrap high around the stone, which looks rich but also hides the edges where chips and cracks start.

Are vintage jade saddle rings worth buying?

They can be, but "vintage" says nothing about whether the stone is natural jadeite. Old saddle rings may be fine Type A jadeite, nephrite, another green stone or treated jadeite, and often carry small cracks from years of wear. Judge one exactly as you would a new ring, and get it tested before paying a jadeite price.

How do I wear and care for a saddle ring?

Treat it as a ring that will one day hit something, because rings take more knocks than any other jewelry. Jadeite is tough, but a hard knock on the saddle or a drop onto a tile floor can crack or break it; see is jade fragile.

  • Take it off for the gym, lifting, sports, gardening, housework and washing dishes.
  • Wear it on your non-dominant hand if you work with your hands.
  • Clean it with lukewarm water, a little mild soap and a soft brush, then dry it. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemicals, especially for metal-set rings and any ring you are not sure is Type A.
  • Store it on its own in a soft pouch, away from harder gemstones and metal pieces that can scratch the polish.
  • Check it now and then with a flashlight for new cracks, and check prongs on a metal saddle every few months.

On JadeiteHub, every jadeite piece we list has a lab certificate. Every sold piece is checked against its certificate at our inspection center before it ships, and if it does not match its description, you get a full refund.

FAQ

What is a jade saddle ring?

A ring with a raised, saddle-shaped top that slopes into a plain band. The classic version is carved from one piece of jadeite. Some rings use a gold or silver saddle-shaped mount with a jadeite cabochon instead.

What does a jade saddle ring mean?

In Chinese, saddle (鞍) sounds like peace (安), and "on the horse" (马上) also means "right away", so the ring is traditionally linked to peace, stability and quick success. These are sayings, not promises.

Can a jade saddle ring be resized?

Not if it is carved from one piece of jadeite. Measure the finger and knuckle in millimeters and choose half a size larger for the wide band. A metal saddle ring with a jadeite cabochon can usually be resized by a jeweler.

Is a saddle ring a men's ring?

It is a classic men's style, but women wear saddle rings too, usually in a narrower, lower cut and in colors such as lavender, icy or light green.

Where do saddle rings crack?

Most often at the shoulders, where the thick saddle meets the thinner band, and at the thin back of the band. Shine a flashlight through the ring and turn it slowly to check.

Why is an all-jade saddle ring more expensive than a cabochon ring?

It is carved from a thick, crack-free block, and most of that block is ground away. The same material could make several cabochons, so a fine saddle ring uses much more jadeite.

Gold or silver saddle ring: which is better?

18K gold holds the stone more securely and does not tarnish, so it suits daily wear. 925 sterling silver is softer and more affordable, fine for a modest stone or occasional wear.
