Jade Butterfly Pendant Meaning: Love, Long Life, Change

In Chinese tradition a jade butterfly is mainly a wish for blessings, long life and love. Butterfly (蝴蝶, húdié) is read as 福叠, "blessings piling up"; 蝶 (dié) sounds like 耋 (dié), old age, so a cat with a butterfly means a long life; and the Butterfly Lovers legend makes a pair of butterflies a symbol of devoted love. In the West a butterfly stands for transformation. The wings are thin, so check them for chips and cracks.

What does a jade butterfly pendant mean?

In Chinese tradition a jade butterfly is mainly a wish for three things: blessings, long life and love. Each comes from a different source, which is why the butterfly is such a flexible motif for carvers.

  • Blessings. Butterfly is 蝴蝶 (húdié). In the jade trade it is often read as 福叠 (fú dié), "blessings piling up", because 蝴 (hú) sounds close to 福 (fú, blessing). It is a loose, popular pun rather than an exact one.
  • Long life. 蝶 (dié) sounds exactly like 耋 (dié), a word for old age in the phrase 耄耋 (màodié), "in one's eighties and nineties". That is why butterflies appear on birthday gifts for elders.
  • Love. In the folk legend of the Butterfly Lovers (梁山伯与祝英台), two lovers who could not marry in life turn into a pair of butterflies and fly together. A pair of butterflies, or a butterfly with a flower, stands for devoted love.

There is also a philosophical side. In the Zhuangzi, the thinker Zhuang Zhou dreams he is a butterfly and wakes unsure whether he is a man who dreamed of being a butterfly or a butterfly dreaming of being a man (庄周梦蝶). The butterfly became an image of freedom and lightness.

These are traditional wishes, not promises: a jade butterfly does not bring love, luck or a long life. Its value lies in the stone, the carving and what it means to you. For other motifs, see jadeite pendant meanings and jadeite meaning and beliefs.

What does a butterfly mean outside China?

In Western culture the butterfly is mostly a symbol of transformation: a caterpillar becomes a butterfly, so the motif stands for change, a new start or recovery. In ancient Greek the word psyche meant both "soul" and "butterfly". Across Southeast Asia, including Vietnam and Thailand, butterflies are widely seen as a picture of beauty and grace.

A jade butterfly carries both readings at once, which makes it an easy gift across cultures: a Chinese wish for blessings and long life, and a Western sign of a new chapter.

Not a pendant: if your search turns up "Jade Butterfly" trees, that is a cultivar of ginkgo with butterfly-shaped leaves, nothing to do with jadeite.

What do butterfly combinations mean?

Chinese carving often pairs the butterfly with another motif to spell out a phrase.

Combination Saying How it works Meaning Often given to
Butterfly alone 福叠 蝴 (hú) close to 福 (fú) Blessings piling up Anyone
Butterfly and flower 蝶恋花 A butterfly drawn to a flower; also the name of a classical poem form Love, sweetness Couples, newlyweds
Pair of butterflies 双蝶 / 化蝶 The Butterfly Lovers Devoted love Couples, anniversaries
Cat and butterfly 耄耋 Cat 猫 (māo) ≈ 耄 (mào); butterfly 蝶 = 耋 (dié) A long life Elders, birthdays
Butterfly and melon 瓜瓞绵绵 瓞 (dié, small melon) = 蝶; from the Book of Songs Many descendants, a family line that goes on Newlyweds, families
Butterfly and peony 富贵 Peony stands for wealth and rank Prosperity with blessings Families

Cat and butterfly is a classic of Chinese painting for elders' birthdays. In small pendants it is less common, because a cat and a butterfly need room; you will see it more on larger plaques and carvings.

Butterfly and melon comes from the line 绵绵瓜瓞 in the Book of Songs (诗经), describing melons growing on and on along a vine. Jade carvers often combine it with a gourd-shaped body and leaves; see jade gourd pendant for gourd and vine motifs, and jade lotus pendant for flowers.

If a seller attaches a saying to a butterfly carving that you cannot find anywhere else, treat it as sales talk.

What styles of jade butterfly are there?

Style What it looks like Notes
Flat butterfly Wings spread, carved on a thin, flat piece Light and easy to wear; check the wingtips
Openwork butterfly Wings pierced with holes and veins Delicate and lively; the most fragile style
Butterfly on a flower or leaf A small butterfly on a larger flower or leaf The flower carries the green; sturdier
Butterfly with melon or gourd Butterfly perched on a fruit with a vine Traditional; good for gifts to families
Butterfly earrings Small matching butterflies, often set in gold Check that the pair matches in color; see jadeite earrings
Butterfly in a metal setting Jade wings set in a gold or silver frame The setting protects thin edges

Color placement (俏色). A good carver puts the color where it reads best: green or lavender on the wings, a patch of yellow or red as markings, an icy base for lightness. A butterfly whose color follows the wings is valued more than the same shape in one flat color. For purple pieces, see lavender jadeite.

How do you judge a jade butterfly?

A butterfly is one of the hardest motifs to carve well, because the wings are thin and the outline is complex.

An icy jadeite butterfly pendant held up against a small flashlight in a dim room, light glowing through the thin wings and showing their carved veins clearly
A flashlight behind the butterfly shows the thin wings and their veins; a line that cuts the light sharply is a crack. Illustration.
  1. Look at the wings first. They should be symmetrical, with smooth edges and wingtips that are not chipped or ground flat. Small chips on the wing edge are the most common damage.
  2. Backlight the thin parts. Shine a small flashlight through the wings, antennae and bail hole and turn the piece slowly. A line that cuts the light sharply is a crack; thin wings are where cracks start.
  3. Check the veins and openwork. Lines should be crisp, even and cleanly polished inside the holes. Dull, rough hollows show where finishing time was saved.
  4. Look at the body and antennae. A defined body and fine antennae give the butterfly life; antennae are often carved close to the wings to protect them.
  5. Machine or hand work. Many low- and mid-grade butterflies are cut on CNC carving machines and finished by hand. Identical, shallow, even cuts are typical. See jadeite carving craftsmanship.
  6. Ask for the certificate. Very bright, very clear small carvings are a common shape for bleached and resin-filled (Type B) or dyed (Type C) jadeite, and vivid purple can be dyed. See how to spot treated jadeite.

When buying online, ask for a flashlight video of the wings, both faces and a side view.

How do you wear and give a jade butterfly?

  • Anyone can wear it. A butterfly is not a religious image, so the customs for Buddha and Guanyin pendants do not apply.
  • Cord or chain. A light butterfly hangs well on a fine chain; a gold or silver bail protects the drill hole. See jade pendant cord and chain.
  • As a gift. A butterfly with a flower or a pair of butterflies for a partner, a cat and butterfly for an elder's birthday, a butterfly with melon for newlyweds, a single butterfly for a graduation or new start. See jadeite gift guide and jade wedding jewelry.
  • Care. Take it off for sport and sleep, keep it away from harder stones, and wash it with lukewarm water and mild soap. A soft brush cleans openwork.

FAQ

What does a jade butterfly pendant mean?

In Chinese tradition it is a wish for blessings, long life and love. 蝴蝶 is read as 福叠 (blessings piling up), 蝶 sounds like 耋 (old age), and a pair of butterflies recalls the Butterfly Lovers. These are traditional wishes, not promises.

What does a butterfly with a cat mean on jade?

Cat (猫, māo) sounds like 耄 (mào) and butterfly (蝶, dié) like 耋 (dié). Together they read 耄耋, a phrase for people in their eighties and nineties, so the pair wishes someone a long life. It is a classic birthday motif for elders.

What does a butterfly with a melon mean?

It reads 瓜瓞绵绵, from the Book of Songs: melons on an endless vine, a wish for many descendants. 瓞 (dié, a small melon) sounds like 蝶, so a butterfly beside a melon stands in for it.

Who can wear a jade butterfly pendant?

Anyone. It is not a religious image, so the customs for Buddha and Guanyin pendants do not apply. It is most often chosen by women and given as a gift for love, a birthday or a new beginning.

Does JadeiteHub sell jade butterfly pendants?

Not at the moment. You can browse our current pendants; the checks in this guide apply to a butterfly from any seller.
