Jade Snake Pendant Meaning: Styles, Choosing and Price

Updated

A green jadeite coiled snake pendant on a dark green silk cord lying on ivory linen, beside a small white jadeite snake carving, in soft daylight

In Chinese tradition the snake is the "little dragon" (小龙) and stands for wisdom, alertness and quiet good fortune; the folk saying 蛇盘兔,必定富 links it with wealth. Snake years include 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013 and 2025, and the snake's harmony signs are the Monkey, the Rooster and the Ox. These are traditional meanings, not promises. Common styles are a coiled snake, a snake plaque, a snake with coins and gold snake rings holding a jadeite cabochon. Check the eyes, the scale lines and the thin tail for cracks, and buy certified natural Type A jadeite: many cheap jade snakes are dyed quartzite, serpentine or glass.

What does a jade snake pendant mean?

In Chinese tradition the snake (蛇, she) has a polite nickname: the little dragon (小龙). It is admired for being clever, alert and calm, and a snake carving is read as a wish for wisdom, careful judgment and quiet, steady good fortune. In jade, it is worn mostly by people born in a Snake year and by those who simply like the sign.

The snake is also an old figure in Chinese myth. Fuxi and Nüwa, the legendary ancestors of humankind, are shown in Han-dynasty art with human heads and intertwined snake tails, and the Legend of the White Snake (白蛇传), a love story about a snake spirit who becomes a woman, is still told in opera and film.

These are traditional meanings, not promises: a jade snake does not bring money, luck or health. For other motifs side by side, see jadeite pendant meanings.

What are the traditional snake sayings?

Snake carvings use fewer puns than horses or monkeys, but a few phrases come up often.

Saying Pinyin What it means Where you see it
小龙 xiao long Little dragon, the polite name for the snake Zodiac pendants; some sellers call a snake pendant 小龙
蛇盘兔,必定富 she pan tu, bi ding fu A snake coiled round a rabbit is sure to be rich Folk saying about a Snake and Rabbit couple; carvings of a snake with a rabbit
灵蛇 ling she Spirited, clever snake Descriptions of snake carvings
金蛇 jin she Golden snake New Year greetings in a Snake year, gold-set snakes

The snake with coins or a gold ingot (元宝) is a common modern design: it simply adds a wealth wish to the zodiac sign. Outside China, the snake shedding its skin is often read as renewal, and a snake biting its tail (the ouroboros) as eternity. Those are Western readings, but they are why snake rings are popular far beyond the zodiac.

When is the Year of the Snake, and who wears a jade snake?

The most recent Snake year was the Wood Snake year (乙巳), from Chinese New Year on 29 January 2025 to 16 February 2026. In Vietnam it was the year Ất Tỵ; in Thailand the Snake year is ปีมะเส็ง. The next Snake year begins at Chinese New Year 2037.

People born in a Snake year (1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013 and 2025, counting from Chinese New Year, not 1 January) often wear their own sign. In the zodiac:

  • Six harmony (六合): Snake and Monkey. A Monkey-year person may wear a snake, and a Snake-year person a monkey; see the jade monkey pendant.
  • Three harmony (三合): Snake, Rooster and Ox.
  • Clash (冲): Snake and Pig. Some Pig-year wearers avoid the snake; others ignore the rule.
  • Birth-year Buddha (本命佛): Chinese buyers who prefer a Buddhist figure choose Samantabhadra (普贤菩萨) for Dragon and Snake years.

For which sign to wear in the coming year, see the 2027 Year of the Goat guide. Beyond the zodiac, anyone can wear a snake; it suits men and women alike.

Snake or naga: what do Thai buyers mean?

In Thailand, a serpent in jewelry often means the naga (พญานาค), the mythical serpent king of Thai and Lao Buddhist art, not an ordinary snake. A naga usually has a crest, a decorated head and sometimes several heads, and many Thai buyers wear it for faith in the naga. A Chinese zodiac snake is a plain serpent, often coiled, with no crest. If you are searching in Thai, จี้งู (snake pendant) and จี้พญานาค (naga pendant) bring up different pieces.

What styles of jade snake are there?

Three green jadeite snake pendants in a row on ivory linen, left to right: a round-carved snake coiled in a compact spiral with its head resting on top, a flat oval plaque with a snake carved in low relief, and a small snake curled around a jadeite gold ingot

Style Chinese name What it looks like Notes
Coiled snake 盘蛇 A round-carved snake in a compact spiral The most popular; compact and strong for daily wear
Snake plaque 蛇牌 A flat plaque with a snake in low relief Needs a clean, flat slab; easy to wear under a shirt
Snake with coins or ingot 蛇配元宝 A snake curled around a coin or ingot The wealth version
Snake and rabbit 蛇盘兔 A snake with a small rabbit A couple's gift for a Snake and Rabbit pair
Snake ring 蛇戒 A gold band shaped like a snake, holding a jadeite cabochon, or a carved jadeite band Popular outside China; see below
Snake bracelet or bangle 蛇手镯 A gold snake bracelet set with jadeite, or a carved bangle Rare in solid jadeite; most are gold with jade accents

Jade snake rings and bracelets

Snake rings have a long history in Western jewelry: Queen Victoria's engagement ring from Prince Albert was a gold snake set with an emerald, and the coiled snake came to stand for lasting love. Today a jade snake ring usually means one of two things:

Close-up on ivory linen in soft daylight, left to right: a yellow gold ring shaped like a coiled snake holding an oval green jadeite cabochon on its head, and a small green jadeite coiled snake pendant showing fine carved scales
From left: 1 gold snake ring set with a jadeite cabochon, 2 coiled snake pendant with carved scales. Illustration.
  • A gold snake setting with a jadeite cabochon. The jade is the snake's head or sits in its coils. The gold does the shaping, so the stone can be a simple oval, and the price depends on the cabochon and the gold weight. See jadeite cabochon guide and what G18K means.
  • A band carved from jadeite. This needs a thick, clean piece of rough, because the snake's body forms the band. It is fragile where the band is thin. See jadeite ring guide for sizes.

Solid jadeite snake bracelets are rare for the same reason; most "jade snake bracelets" are gold or silver with jade beads or cabochons, or bead bracelets with a snake charm.

How do you choose a good jade snake?

  1. Look at the head and eyes. The head should be clearly shaped and the eyes cut cleanly; a blurred, rounded lump of a head shows hurried work.
  2. Check the scales and body lines. Fine carvers cut scales or a smooth, flowing body; machine-cut snakes often have shallow, identical scale marks. Either is fine if the price matches.
  3. Follow the coil. The body should taper evenly from head to tail and the coils should sit naturally. The gaps between coils should be polished as brightly as the outside.
  4. Backlight the tail. The tail tip is the thinnest part. Shine a small flashlight through it and through each coil, turning slowly: a line that blocks the light is a crack.
  5. Judge color in daylight. A band of green along the body or a brown skin used for the head (俏色) can add value; perfectly even, bright color should make you suspicious.
  6. Get the size. Ask for length, width and thickness in millimeters; a coiled snake can be thick for a pendant.
  7. Ask for a lab certificate naming natural (Type A) jadeite, and check that the photo and size match.

For how hand and machine carving differ, see jadeite carving craftsmanship.

Are cheap jade snakes real jadeite?

Often not. Low-priced green snake pendants, rings and figurines are commonly dyed quartzite, serpentine, glass or resin, and some are treated jadeite (bleached and filled, or dyed). White jade snakes are often nephrite, which is real jade but a different mineral; see jadeite vs nephrite. Read jadeite look-alikes and how to spot treated jadeite, and check any certificate with how to verify a jadeite certificate.

What drives the price of a jade snake pendant?

Factor What to look at
Texture and translucency (种水) The biggest driver: icy and glassy snakes cost far more than coarse ones
Color How green and how even, and whether the color is on the snake's body or only the base
Cleanliness Cracks across the coils or the tail cut the value sharply
Carving Hand or machine; head, scales and polish in the gaps
Size and thickness A round-carved coil needs a thick, clean piece of rough
Setting For rings and bracelets, the gold weight and workmanship
Certificate A lab report naming natural Type A jadeite

A small, plain coiled snake in fine, translucent material can cost more than a large snake in coarse stone. See what determines jadeite price.

How do you wear and care for a jade snake?

  • A coiled snake hangs well on a short cord at the collarbone; a plaque suits a longer cord or chain. A red cord is the traditional choice in a wearer's own zodiac year. See jade pendant cord and chain.
  • Take it off for sport and sleep: the tail and head chip first.
  • Clean it with lukewarm water and mild soap, using a soft brush in the coils, and dry it.
  • Store it apart from harder stones and other jewelry.

FAQ

What does a jade snake pendant mean?

In Chinese tradition the snake is called the little dragon (小龙) and stands for wisdom, alertness and good fortune. Many people also wear their own zodiac sign. These are traditional meanings; a jade snake does not bring luck, money or health by itself.

Is it bad luck to wear a snake?

Not in Chinese tradition. The snake is one of the twelve zodiac animals and a polite name for it is little dragon. Some people simply do not like snakes; if the wearer feels that way, choose another motif.

Who should wear a jade snake?

Anyone who likes it. People born in Snake years (1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013, 2025) often wear their own sign, and Monkey, Rooster and Ox people sometimes choose the snake as a harmony sign.

When is the next Year of the Snake?

The last one, the Wood Snake year, ran from 29 January 2025 to 16 February 2026. The next Snake year begins at Chinese New Year 2037.

Is a jade snake ring real jadeite?

Some are. A carved jadeite band or a gold snake setting holding a jadeite cabochon can both be genuine, but many cheap green snake rings are glass, dyed quartzite or plated metal. Ask for a lab certificate that names natural jadeite.

What is the difference between a snake and a naga?

A snake carving shows a plain serpent, often coiled. A naga (พญานาค) is a mythical serpent king from Thai and Lao Buddhist art, usually with a crest and several heads. They are different motifs with different meanings.
