Thai Birth Day Colors and Jade: Which Jade for Your Day?

Updated

Seven jadeite pendants and cabochons in a row on ivory linen in soft daylight, some with small gold bails: red, yellow, pinkish lavender, green, orange, pale blue and purple

In Thai tradition each day of the week has a color: Sunday red, Monday yellow, Tuesday pink, Wednesday green (Wednesday night grey or black), Thursday orange, Friday light blue and Saturday purple. Many Thai buyers pick jadeite in their birth-day color: green for Wednesday, lavender for Saturday, yellow for Monday, blue-water for Friday. It is a cultural choice, not a luck guarantee. Each color has its own fakes, so buy certified natural Type A.

Which jade color matches each Thai birth day?

In Thailand, every day of the week has its own color (สีประจำวันเกิด), linked in traditional astrology to the planet and guardian deity of that day. Many Thai people know their birth day and wear its color, and the same idea is used when choosing jewelry, including jadeite (หยกพม่า).

Jadeite comes in almost every one of these colors naturally, which is one reason it is popular as a birth-day gift.

Birth day Day color Jadeite colors often chosen Trade names
Sunday Red Red to orange-red jadeite Red jadeite (红翡)
Monday Yellow Yellow to honey jadeite Yellow jadeite (黄翡), honey yellow
Tuesday Pink Pinkish lavender Pink spring (粉春)
Wednesday (day) Green Green jadeite of any shade Bright green, spicy green, apple green, floating green
Wednesday (night) Grey or black Black jadeite Mo cui (墨翠), black-chicken (乌鸡)
Thursday Orange Orange-red or orange-yellow jadeite Red or yellow jadeite
Friday Light blue Blue water, blue-green Blue water (蓝水), qingshui (晴水)
Saturday Purple Lavender jadeite Lavender (紫罗兰), spring color (春色)

This is a cultural tradition. No jade color brings luck, money or love by itself; people wear their day color because it means something to them.

How do you know your Thai birth day?

Most people simply look up the weekday of their birth date. Two details trip people up:

  • Sunrise, not midnight. In traditional Thai astrology the day begins at sunrise. Someone born before about 6 a.m. is often counted as born on the previous day.
  • Wednesday has two colors. Wednesday daytime is green; Wednesday night, from about 6 p.m. until sunrise on Thursday, has its own color, grey or black.

Astrologers do not all draw these lines in exactly the same way. If it matters to you, ask the one you trust.

Sunday and Thursday: red and orange jadeite

Red jadeite (红翡) ranges from orange-red to brownish red; yellow jadeite runs from lemon to honey. Orange sits between them, so Thursday-born buyers usually choose an orange-red or deep orange-yellow piece.

  • What to look for: a clear, warm red rather than brownish or muddy, and good translucency. Bright, translucent red is rare.
  • Watch out for: heated color (烤色). Brownish yellow jadeite can be heated to turn red; heated pieces are often dull and dry. Dyed red is also common.

See red and yellow jadeite.

Monday: yellow and honey jadeite

Yellow is a common jadeite color and often affordable. Honey yellow (蜜糖黄) on an icy-glutinous base is a popular choice for Monday-born wearers.

  • What to look for: a clean, bright yellow that is even across the piece.
  • Watch out for: dye, and yellow quartzite or other stones sold as "yellow jade".

Tuesday: pinkish lavender

Pink is rare as a pure color in jadeite. What sellers call pink is usually a pinkish lavender, sometimes called pink spring (粉春).

  • What to look for: a soft, even pink-purple tone; it often looks pinker in warm light and bluer in daylight.
  • Watch out for: dyed purple, which can look bright and uniform with color collecting in cracks. See lavender jadeite.

Wednesday: green, and black for Wednesday night

Green is the color most people picture when they think of jade, which makes Wednesday-born wearers the easiest to shop for. The range runs from imperial green and spicy green to apple green and floating green flowers in an icy base.

For Wednesday night, black jadeite (墨翠) looks black in normal light but glows deep green when a flashlight shines through a thin edge. See black jadeite.

Friday: blue water and blue-green jadeite

Natural jadeite is rarely a true sky blue. Friday-born buyers usually choose blue water (蓝水), an icy jadeite with a pale cool blue tone, or a pale even blue-green called qingshui (晴水).

  • What to look for: a clean blue rather than grey, and high transparency.
  • Watch out for: very bright, even sky-blue "jade", which is usually dyed quartzite or glass. See blue water jadeite.

Saturday: lavender jadeite

Purple is Saturday's color, and lavender jadeite (紫罗兰) is one of the most loved jadeite colors in Thailand. It ranges from pinkish to bluish purple, and from pale to deep.

  • What to look for: a deeper, more even purple and a finer texture raise the price; most lavender is glutinous rather than icy.
  • Watch out for: dyed purple, which is common. See lavender jadeite.

What about white jade or several colors?

White and colorless jadeite are not among the seven day colors, so they are usually treated as neutral: anyone can wear them. A piece with three or more colors, such as green, purple and red together (福禄寿), is often chosen so that it covers several wishes at once. See white jadeite and Fu Lu Shou jadeite.

What about lucky and unlucky colors?

Thai astrologers also publish colors for luck, love, money and work for each birth day, and an "unlucky" color (สีกาลกิณี) to avoid. These lists differ from one astrologer to another and often change every year, so there is no single correct table. If you follow one, use the list from the astrologer you trust. The day colors in the table above are the stable, traditional part.

For how jade colors are linked to the Chinese five elements instead, see jade and the five elements; for other Thai and Chinese beliefs, see jadeite meaning and beliefs.

How do you choose jade as a birth-day gift?

  • Find out their day. Ask, or work it out from their birth date; most Thai people know it.
  • Choose the piece first, then the color. A pendant or bead bracelet needs no size; a bangle or ring does. See jadeite gift guide.
  • A little color is enough. A white piece with a touch of the day color, such as green flowers for a Wednesday-born, keeps the meaning at a lower price.
  • Buy certified. Several day colors, especially green, purple and red, are often dyed or heated.

FAQ

Which jade is good for someone born on Saturday?

Saturday's color is purple, so Saturday-born wearers often choose lavender jadeite (紫罗兰). Check the certificate, because purple is one of the colors most often dyed.

Which birth day suits green jade?

Wednesday. Wednesday's daytime color is green, which makes the classic green jadeite bangle a natural choice for Wednesday-born wearers. Wednesday night has its own color, grey or black.

Which day is white jade for?

White is not one of the seven Thai day colors, so white or colorless jadeite is usually treated as neutral: anyone can wear it, whatever their birth day.

Does wearing my birth-day color bring luck?

It is a Thai cultural tradition. There is no evidence that a jade color brings luck. Choose a color you like and will enjoy wearing.

What if I was born before sunrise?

In traditional Thai astrology the day changes at sunrise, not midnight, so someone born before about 6 a.m. is often counted as born on the previous day. Astrologers differ, so check with the one you trust.
