Apple Green Jade: Color, Value and How to Spot Dye

An icy apple green jadeite bangle and a bright yellowish green jadeite pendant on ivory linen in soft daylight

Apple green jade (苹果绿, often shortened to 果绿) is jadeite with a bright, fresh green that leans slightly toward yellow. It is livelier than bean green, lighter than bright green and well below imperial green. Texture changes it a lot: icy apple green glows, glutinous looks softer. Judge it in daylight, check color distribution with a flashlight, and confirm natural Type A jadeite with a certificate, because green is the color most often dyed.

What is apple green jade?

Apple green jade is jadeite with a bright, fresh green that leans slightly toward yellow, like the skin of a green apple. In Chinese it is called 苹果绿 (píngguǒ lǜ), and sellers often shorten it to 果绿 ("fruit green").

It sits in the middle of the jadeite green scale. It is livelier than pale bean green, lighter and more yellowish than bright green (阳绿), and well below imperial green in depth and purity. Most apple green on the market is natural Type A jadeite in icy, glutinous or bean texture, which is why it is one of the most popular greens for everyday pendants, rings and bead bracelets.

Three points before you shop:

  • It is a trade name, not a lab grade. A certificate names the material (jadeite) and any treatment. It does not say "apple green". The color name comes from the seller.
  • 果绿 is not always the same as 苹果绿. Many sellers use the two as one name. Some use 果绿 for a paler, more yellowish version. Read the photos, not the word.
  • The color comes mainly from chromium. Green in jadeite is mostly caused by chromium; iron tends to give duller, grayer or more yellowish greens. A bright, clean apple green is natural color, not a sign of treatment by itself.

For where apple green sits among all jadeite colors, see the jadeite colors guide.

How do you tell apple green from bright, spicy, bean and imperial green?

The imperial green guide ranks the green names from top to bottom. Here the question is narrower: what separates apple green from the greens it is most often confused with?

Name Chinese How it differs from apple green What to look for
Bean green 豆绿 Paler and duller, usually in coarse, grainy material Visible grain under a flashlight; color looks flat in daylight
Clear green 晴绿 Even, light green spread through clear material, often cooler and more watery A wash of color rather than a fresh, fruity green
Apple green 苹果绿 / 果绿 Bright, fresh, a touch of yellow, medium depth Lively in daylight, never blackish
Bright green 阳绿 More saturated and purer; the yellow tint is gone Color holds its strength in neutral light
Spicy green 辣绿 Strong, vivid, sharp green, deeper than apple Intense even in a small piece; not the same as imperial green
Imperial green 帝王绿 Deep, pure and even, in fine, highly translucent material Rare; needs color and texture at the top together

Two practical rules follow:

  • Yellow tint is the signature. Hold the piece next to something neutral white in daylight. Apple green looks warm and fresh. If it looks blue or gray, it is not apple green, whatever the title says.
  • Words drift upward. Apple green is often sold as 阳绿 (bright green), and bright apple green as "imperial". Spicy green (辣绿) is valued, but it is not imperial green either.

Why does the same apple green look different in icy, glutinous and bean jadeite?

Color never stands alone in jadeite. The texture (种) and translucency (水) under it decide how the green looks. Traders say 种好色才活, "good texture brings the color to life". For the full system, see zhong, shui and se explained.

Texture Chinese How apple green looks in it
Icy 冰种果绿 Light passes deep into the stone, so the green seems to glow from inside. The most attractive form of apple green, and the one most often photographed
Glutinous-icy 糯冰种 Soft and moist, slightly hazy; the green is gentler but still fresh
Glutinous 糯种 Milky, opaque-looking body; the green is softer and more solid, like jelly. Common in bead bracelets and bangles
Bean 豆种 Coarse grain you can see; the green often breaks into dots between crystals and looks flatter
Three apple green jadeite pieces in a row on ivory linen in soft daylight: a translucent round pendant glowing from inside, a strand of soft milky green beads, and a grainy, more opaque green bangle
From left: 1 icy apple green (冰种果绿), translucent, the color glows from inside; 2 glutinous apple green beads (糯种), softer and more solid; 3 bean texture (豆种), grainy and flatter. The same family of color, three very different looks. Illustration.

Thickness matters too. A thin pendant always looks clearer and lighter than a thick bangle of the same material, and strong color makes the stone look less transparent.

Does apple green have to be even?

No, and most of it is not. Natural green forms in patches, veins and roots, so apple green jadeite comes in several patterns:

  • Full color (满色): green across the whole piece. Rare in larger pieces, especially bangles, and priced accordingly.
  • Floating flowers (飘花): apple green wisps or threads in an icy, pale body. See icy jadeite and floating flowers.
  • A patch of green (一抹绿): one area of color on a white or pale body, often placed where it shows when worn.
  • Color roots (色根): the darker, thread-like start of a green patch, where the color is strongest. Under a flashlight, natural color often fades out gradually from these roots.

Evenness raises value, but uneven natural color is normal, and many buyers prefer the life of a patterned piece. What matters is that the green looks natural: soft edges, color that follows the stone, not a uniform stain.

Why does apple green look different under every light?

Apple green sits close to yellow, so the light you see it in can push it either way.

Light What it does to green jadeite
Warm yellow lamp, many shop lights Adds yellow: a cool, bluish or grayish green can look like apple green, and apple green looks richer
Cool white LED, phone flash Makes green look brighter and cleaner; a yellowish green can look like bright green
Strong backlight (live streams, light trays) Makes almost any jadeite look translucent and glowing
Neutral daylight by a window, out of direct sun The fairest view of the real tone

So judge apple green in daylight, over white paper, and ask for at least one photo or video taken the same way. Photo filters and raised saturation can turn a pale fruit green into vivid green. Our guide to judging jadeite from online photos covers what to ask a seller for.

How do I spot dyed apple green jade?

Green is the color most often dyed, and a pleasant apple green is easy to imitate. Dyed jadeite is called Type C; bleached, resin-filled and dyed jadeite is Type B+C. See Type A vs Type B vs Type C jadeite.

What you see More typical of natural apple green Warning signs of dye
Color with a flashlight behind it Patches and roots that fade out gradually Color sits in a fine net along cracks and grain boundaries, with paler gaps between
Evenness Varies across the piece Very uniform, flat or "painted" green over the whole piece
Color in cracks Cracks are not greener than the stone around them Green gathers inside cracks and pits
Luster Bright, glassy Soft, waxy or slightly plastic (common in B+C)
Price Matches color, texture and size Bright, even green at a low price

A Chelsea filter is sometimes used as a quick test: some dyed green jade turns reddish or pink under it, while natural jadeite usually stays green. Many modern dyes stay green too, so a green result proves nothing. It is a clue, not proof.

Two green jadeite pieces lit from behind by a small flashlight on ivory linen: on the left, natural green in soft patches fading at the edges; on the right, dyed green concentrated in a fine net of lines
From left, with a flashlight behind each piece: 1 natural apple green, color in patches with soft, fading edges; 2 dyed green, color held in a fine net along cracks and grain boundaries. Illustration.

Only a gem lab can confirm natural, untreated color. For the full method, see how to spot treated jadeite, and for fakes that are not jadeite at all, such as green glass and dyed quartzite, see how to tell if jade is real.

What does apple green jade mean?

Apple green carries the meanings of green jade in general:

  • China: green stands for life, growth and 平安 (peace and safety). A fresh green is a classic gift for a new start.
  • Vietnam: in ngũ hành, green is the Wood color. Folk advice says green suits Wood (mệnh Mộc) and Fire (mệnh Hỏa) people, because Wood feeds Fire, and tells Earth (mệnh Thổ) people to be careful. See jade and the Five Elements.
  • Thailand: green is the Wednesday color, so Wednesday-born buyers often choose green jade.

These are traditions and personal meaning, not properties of the stone. See jade meaning and beliefs.

Which piece suits apple green: bangle, ring, pendant or beads?

Apple green is found in every category, but each one asks for different checks.

Piece Why apple green works What to check
Pendant Small pieces are cut from the best color, so icy apple green is easiest to find here Thickness, whether the green is on the front, setting metal
Ring (cabochon or saddle) A small surface can show clean, even green Dome and thickness (a thin, flat stone looks lighter), backing, cracks at the girdle; see the jadeite ring guide
Bangle Full apple green around a whole bangle is rare; most have patches or flowers Where the color sits when worn, cracks through the whole ring, color under a flashlight all around
Bead bracelet or necklace Even green across many matched beads Whether the beads match each other in daylight, cracks at drill holes; see the bead bracelet guide

Beads show how color and quantity work together. As of 22 October 2026, the apple green pieces on sale at JadeiteHub include an icy apple green round wu shi pai pendant set in 925 silver (JH-000010, US$679), an icy apple green wu shi pai with green flowers in 925 silver (JH-000018, US$299), and a glutinous green bead bracelet of 19 matched 10 mm beads (JH-000044, US$6,619). The bracelet costs many times more than the pendants, although its texture is lower, because it needs a large amount of material in one consistent green. For more on how pendants of the same shape vary, see wu shi pai pendants.

How do I buy apple green jade safely?

  1. Look in daylight first. Ask for a photo or video by a window over white paper, without filters.
  2. Ask for a flashlight video moved around the whole piece, to see how the color is distributed and whether there are cracks.
  3. Check the names against the photos. If a title says 阳绿 or "imperial", compare the green with the tables above.
  4. Ask for the dimensions, including thickness, and for close-ups of any marks.
  5. Get a lab certificate stating natural jadeite (Type A), and check it online. See how to verify a jadeite certificate.

On JadeiteHub, listings use the seller's own photos, and some include video. Every piece ships with a certificate from an accredited national testing lab, every sold piece is checked against its certificate before it ships, and if it does not match the description you get a full refund.

FAQ

What is apple green jade?

It is jadeite with a bright, fresh green that leans slightly toward yellow, called 苹果绿 or 果绿 in Chinese. It is a trade color name, not a lab grade, and sits between bean green and bright green on the jadeite green scale.

Is apple green jade the same as imperial green?

No. Imperial green (帝王绿) is deeper, purer and more even, in fine, highly translucent material, and is far rarer. Apple green is lighter and slightly yellowish. Listings often stretch the word "imperial" to cover apple green.

Is apple green jade valuable?

It can be. Value depends on how bright and even the green is, the texture and translucency, size, cracks and whether it is natural. Icy apple green in a clean piece is valued well above apple green in coarse bean material.

How can I tell if apple green jade is dyed?

Look with a flashlight behind the piece: dyed green often sits in a fine net along cracks and grain boundaries, and looks unusually even. A Chelsea filter is only a clue. A lab certificate stating natural, untreated jadeite is the proof.

Who should wear apple green jade?

Anyone who likes it. By tradition, green is the Wood color: Vietnamese folk advice says it suits Wood and Fire people, and in Thailand green is the Wednesday color. These are traditions, not properties of the stone.
